River Rafting

 

Overview:
We offer a full day and or half day paddle option on the Breede River.
The section of the Breede River paddled is a very relaxed, easy float with a couple of fast flowing channels and beautiful scenery. The trip is suited for first time rafters and non - swimmers. The half day option is most popular for school groups. Usually 2 people paddle in a boat depending on competence of the paddler (assessed by the guide).

The half day option’s put in point is at our base camp. Groups paddle for +- 8km down river to the low water bridge which crosses the river. Here a bus picks up the learners and takes them back to the base camp. This trip usually takes three hours to complete.

The full day paddle’s option starts at Nekkies Holiday resort. Groups paddle down to the weir where they stop next to the river for lunch. They then paddle further and end at our Bundi base camp. This paddle is +- 15 km long and its duration is from 09:00 – 12:30 and then stop for lunch. 13:30 – 16:00 ending at our base camp.

Outcome:
Learners learn a new skill and get out of their comfort zones by interacting in an informal setting with others.

High Ropes Course & Climbing Wall

 

Overview:
The high ropes course consists of 10 obstacles stretched over 120m amongst the trees. There is also a 7m high climbing wall with an easy and harder route. This activity is completed in pairs, one member on the course and the other below to guide and motivate. This course is focused on personal development. Depending on the age and strength of the learners the full course can be completed or only half the course. Learners are given a full instruction, learning about the equipment used and safety talk before they start the activity. On average it takes a learner 15 mins to complete the half course and 30 mins to complete the full course. Depending on the strength of the learner the climbing wall usually takes 10 – 15 minutes per learner.

Personal development, determination and goal setting.

Paintball

 

Overview:
Set up amongst the natural vegetation of the Breede River Valley leaners engage in an outdoor paintball arena. The activity takes place in a rotational round robin format after which winning teams play against each other and losing teams play against each other. Various games are played within the time allocated. This activity is an option for grade 7 – grade 12 learners. The paintball is run by a professional paintball service provider. Learners are engaged in the paintball for 2 – 3 hours playing on and off.

Outcome:
Team strategizing, planning and fun.

Low Ropes

 

Overview:
The low ropes consists of four challenging team activities; the tyre juggle, target shooting, the wall and the web. Teams will have to combine planning, communication and team work in order to complete these activities, competing against other groups. The entire challenge takes about an hour to complete.

Patience, teamwork, strategy and planning

Bushcamp & Hikes

 

Overview:

For the hike, learners are taught the basic skills of hiking such as what food, clothing, route and gear to consider when planning a hike. Learners are requested to pack their own hiking bag for the day and night outing. After the brief intro to hiking learners go on a short hike in the veld. They get introduced to tracking and identification of the vegetation and species of the area. Some basic survivor skills such as the collection and purification of water and making a fire are illustrated. Once groups arrive at their campsite across the river they set up camp and are taught to set up their own tents. The campsite is very primitive with no running water or electricity and a long drop. Learners prepare their own food in a “potjie” making challenge in teams.  The day ends with an evening orientation and stars talk, camp fire stories and braaing of marshmallows. The next day camp is broken down and learners return back to base camp.
This activity can be set up as a full day and night outing or a half day and night outing.

Outcome:
Basic camping, hiking, food preparation and outdoor survivor skills are introduced.

Teambuilding Games

 

Overview:
Learners compete in a mini team challenge event incorporating a variety of team building games and challenges. The 10 challenges include a team skies race, A frame walk, collective sack race, raft construct, crossing the river and tug of war, to mention a few.
Depending on the amount of learners this activity usually takes +- 2 hours to complete.

Outcome:
Planning, team motivation, team identity and fun.

Evening & Stars Orientation

 

Overview:
Learners are orientated in terms of how to find their way in the evening and identify key stars and signs. They leave on a short walk in the area and learn how nocturnal animals are adapted to the night is discussed. What night vision is and how it works is also explained. Learners are taught how to use their senses more comfortably in the dark. This activity takes approximately one hour long.

Outcome:
Awareness and becoming comfortable with darkness and the night life which surrounds us.

Food & Hygiene

 

Overview:
Learners are introduced to the basic food preparation and hygiene rules. Guided by a theme and ingredients provided groups are required to create the best potjie kos in their teams. Groups are judged on appearance, taste and creativity. Learners are given 2 to 3 hours’ time for the planning and preparation of their potjie.

Team productivity, creativity and learning about food preparation and hygiene

Adventure Challenge

 

Overview:
This activity incorporates communication skills, strategizing, planning, and team productivity. Orientated by a map groups are required to find certain points and answer questions competing against the clock and other teams. This team activity is similar to an amazing race. (Compete in teams of 4). The questions asked in this challenge are based on things learners have learnt or been exposed to over the duration of the camp. This activity can therefore serve as a summary of the camp where each group are allocated a mark for amount of answers correct and time taken. This activity from start to debriefing takes about two hours long.

The Maze

 

Overview:
The Maze is a 12 x 3m pitch black course with different routes to follow. This activity encourages teams to challenge themselves and focus in order to reach the other side. This activity may be completed in teams. Reliability, using all your senses and trust is required to complete this challenge.

Team dependability, communication and focus.

Team Identification

 

Overview:
This activity is done with newly formed groups. In teams together they from an identity by creating a team name, war cry and team flag. Groups can be allocated according to a theme or choose their own names. The war cries must be intimidating and is presented to other groups on the stage. Teams design and paint a team flag which gets hung up in camp and can be taken back to school. The activity takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

Outcome:
Different members come together to form one team, unity and respect for each other.

Geography & Science

 

Overview:
The Breede River valley provides the ideal setting for geography and science education and awareness to flourish. Identifying alien invasive vegetation of the area, collecting invertebrates form the water source, water filtration, investigation of bait for the fish of the Breede River, map work, rock formation and soil identification are a couple of examples. Learners are also taught to use a tree popper. Relevant educational themes dealt with in the classroom can be incorporated and practically come alive in this outdoor setting. Activities are customized to suit the age and level of the learners.

Outcome:
Relevant geography and science education. Taking the classroom to a stimulating outdoor environment.

Art & Drama

 

Overview:
Art and drama activities are facilitated in an informal manner at the camp. The camp has a stage where performances can be made. From presenting war cries and skits to singing and dancing can be incorporated in the camp program. Designing and painting T- shirts and team flags are also done. This Breede River setting also provides the ideal creative environment for photography or creative writing to be done.

Outcome:
Stimulating various forms of creative arts in an outdoor stetting.

First Aid Training

 

Overview:
For this activity we use the services of the Medical Education Centre who are a qualified training institute. They facilitate an interactive one day course which looks at basic first aid training. Themes covered are prevention, emergency scene management, looking for vital signs, acute illness and wounds & bleeding. At the end of the day learners obtain a basic first aid certificate. This is a full day activity.

Outcome:
Learners achieve lifesaving skills that will allow him/her to prevent accidents and injuries at school, minimise the severity of injuries occurred and help with the creation of a safe and healthy learning environment.

Sound & Lighting

 

Overview:
Together with Bundi Productions an introductory sound and lighting workshop is facilitated. Learners are introduced to the fundamentals of sound including the physics and visualising of sound, power and decibels.  They are exposed to the tools of the trade including input sources, mixers, amplifiers, loudspeakers and cabling. They will gain some experience in the techniques of mixing, rigging as well as basic light engineering.  This workshop can be offered as a half day activity or three day workshop.

Outcome:
Exposure to the fundamentals of sound and light engineering.

Nappy Run

 

Overview:
The nappy run is a fun activity done on the Orange and Breede River. Students take off their life jackets and tie them around their bottoms like a nappy. They then slide down a fast flowing channel of water floating on their bottoms. Students can hold on to each other or make a train while going through the channel. Once through learners walk back to the top and can repeat the process.

Outcome:
Fun and interaction as an individual or in a group.

Big Five Game Drive & Walk

 

Overview:
A short 30 minutes’ drive from our camp site, Fairy Glen Big 5 Game Farm is found.  A two to three hour game drive can be done where the Big Five game species are viewed from close and personal. A short beautiful walk to the Fairy Glen dam is also incorporated. This is an educational and exhilarating outing for all learners.

Outcome:
Outdoor safari experience and learning of the magnificent game found in our country.
